Sleep: Supporting Healthy Rest and Development

Quality sleep plays an important role in a child's health, development, learning, and daily well-being. Because breathing and sleep are closely connected, understanding a child's airway and oral development can be an important part of comprehensive orthodontic care.

When Sleep and Breathing Intersect

Certain sleep-related signs may indicate that a child should be evaluated further.

These can include:

  • Frequent snoring
  • Mouth breathing during sleep
  • Restless sleep
  • Difficulty maintaining restful sleep
  • Unusual sleeping positions
  • Daytime fatigue or difficulty staying focused

These signs do not necessarily mean a child has a sleep disorder. However, they may be reasons for parents to discuss their concerns with an appropriate healthcare professional.

A Collaborative Approach

The Pediatric Orthodontist believes in looking beyond the alignment of teeth alone. When appropriate, orthodontic care can be part of a broader team-based approach that may include pediatricians, sleep specialists, ENT physicians, and other healthcare professionals.

The goal is to understand the individual needs of each child and help connect families with the appropriate resources and specialists.
